Is that like... possibly really bad for AWD system over time?

Theoretically yes. A donut should only be used long enough to get the vehicle on a flatbed and then into a shop. Generally differences in tire size are bad for AWD systems. But I could be mistaken about the Acura in particular.

I’m guessing that the T/C system would probably be over compensating for that tire a lot, probably much worse for that than the AWD it’s self. hopefully they are just limping to get a new tire..

depends, the donuts on many AWD cars is the same overall diameter of the OE tire so it wont cause damage, that being said driving around with different size tires on an AWD system is bad news. However, the SHAWD may have provisions for that because the rear drive unit doesn’t have a differential and can fully decouple a single wheel, or slip the clutch to compensate since its designed to slip a clutch in its normal duty cycle.

From what I understand, my Outback (6MT!) has a space saver that’s pretty damn close to the right diameter. Subaru claims a difference in tire circumference of just 1/4" is a problem...

Depends on diameter I guess.

Right, I seem to remember hearing something like that. I’m highly skeptical of that, though, since almost nowhere in typical driving would that small of a difference outweigh variations in alignment and tire wear, to say nothing of normal driving almost never being in a straight line. 1/4" in circumference wouldn’t even outweigh the variation from“straightness” due to
crown on the road,
for pity’s sake. A little over 1/32" difference in tread depth? Horseshit and scaremongering, IMHO.

Stop smarting! Also, thanks.
The donut was... much smaller. In size and width. Whole car was on a tilt.

On my old Mazdaspeed 6, which had a Torsen rear LSD, I got a flat on one of my rear tires. Rather than a donut, I decided to use one of my snow tires on that corner since it was at least a full-size wheel and tire.
That didn’t make the car very happy at all, even with tires the same diameter. The back end of the car kinda waggled from side to side when going in a straight line. When I got home from work that day I put another snow tire on the other side of the rear axle and that fixed the problem.
I’m guessing it was because of the huge difference in traction between a grippy summer tire vs. a “performance” snow tire. It was an...interesting experience.

This is why everybody should get a drag front-runner to use as a spare. Narrow, light, and full diameter.

Some systems have provisions for that. Others... don’t. Sometimes it’s not even the AWD system that hates it. I used to commute with a coworker who had a first-gen fwd Escape. With the donut on it, the stability/traction control wouldn’t let it go any faster than about 20mph before it cut power and slammed on the brakes... it was a loooong drive home.

AWD cars that sensitive should have a full-size spare, and so should other cars.

I do not disagree with you at all. It’s a difference of what? less than 5 revolutions per mile? I give that claim as much credibility as them telling me that burning a quart of oil in 5,000 miles in a car manufactured 25 months ago is “normal.”
